On Monday 15th September 2025, KC Care hosted Katherine South, Care Home Hydration Project Lead at NHS South Yorkshire ICB, at its Wellbeing Centre to deliver her award winning Hydration Training to all staff members.
After recently implementing its own Hydration Project and appointing Megan Heeley as the Hydration Champion, the organisation contacted Katherine for guidance on available training. Although Katherine's project mainly focuses on residential care, KC Care identified that individuals receiving care in their own homes may have higher risks of poor hydration due to being unmonitored between care visits. Consequently, Katherine developed a bespoke training session for the team.
As part of the Hydration Project, each client will receive a complimentary 30-minute visit from the Hydration Champion at least twice a week. During these visits, Megan will provide drinks and snacks with hydrating properties, monitor fluid intake, and offer advice on maintaining adequate hydration. This service is now included in every domiciliary care client's care plan.
To support the Hydration Champion's role, Michelle Roberts, Services Compliance Manager, prepared an information pack. After the training, Katherine requested to use this material in future sessions.
Hydration is an important aspect of physical and mental health. It is often overlooked and symptoms may be mistaken for more serious conditions. Insufficient hydration can contribute to hospital admissions for older adults and may be associated with strokes, falls, confusion, urinary tract infections, and other medical issues. KC Care aims to address hydration proactively in its services.
